Integrated student support

This was a lecture that I ended up showcaseing as a workshop for our lecturers at VCPE ... I thought others may benifit too: This lecture was a roaring success and it may also work as a summarising and paraphrasing workshop. I racked my brain on how to lecture this section of work - because, lets face it, summarising and paraphrasing is *snore* BORING! I realised that the steps in the summarising and paraphrasing processes are theory based and will probably be in the exam, but creating a mind map is a skill... So. I asked the students to help me create a mind map on the board of the content in Chapter 5 IN THEIR OWN WORDS. I then got them some flip chart paper and they did their own mind maps (and referenced them). They loved it, it may also be because I allowed them to pump the music while they were at it, and once one student was done I allowed for some collaboration on the other person’s mind map... The result: •The students read the work •Paraphrased the work for my mind map •Saw it completed on the whiteboard •AND then wrote the work down •While they were busy they discussed it amongst themselves •They left with notes For those students that did not have a textbook? I loaded google books on my laptop and they could work too ... and they learned about another resource. I moved around to assist where I could and to encourage the guys to use their own words
